The designers, composers, and studios behind Earth Defense Force

Sandlot

Founded in 2001, Sandlot is the studio behind every mainline EDF entry except the early spin-offs.

Sandlot was founded in March 2001 by staff who previously worked at Human Entertainment, the Japanese developer behind the Fire Pro Wrestling series, which dissolved around 2000. Sandlot's debut title was Robot Alchemic Drive (JP: Gigantic Drive), released November 28, 2002 on PlayStation 2 — a giant-mech alien-invasion game that directly prefigured EDF's core design.

The studio's defining philosophy is one of approachability: large numbers of enemies, satisfying destruction, and co-operative play that rewards repeat sessions without demanding mastery. Sandlot has maintained this philosophy across more than two decades and seven mainline EDF titles.

Creators

Shirō Kuroda

Lead Designer & Director

Shirō Kuroda is the lead game designer and director of the Earth Defense Force series at Sandlot. He came from Human Entertainment, where he worked on titles including the Fire Pro Wrestling series, before founding Sandlot in 2001.

Kuroda has directed every mainline Sandlot EDF entry from EDF 2017 through EDF 6. His design philosophy emphasises approachability and the cathartic pleasure of overwhelming enemy waves. In interviews, Kuroda has described EDF's appeal as the simple satisfaction of shooting enormous numbers of things without friction.

Jun Fukuda

Composer — EDF 2017, EDF 2025, EDF 4.1

Jun Fukuda is the primary composer for early and mid-series EDF titles. His EDF 2017 soundtrack features an orchestral, heroic style designed to evoke 1950s–1960s B-movie science fiction — a perfect complement to the series' lovingly earnest tone.

The Earth Defense Force 2017 original soundtrack was released commercially in Japan by D3 Publisher / Pony Canyon, and remains the series' most beloved score among fans. Fukuda also composed for EDF 2025 and EDF 4.1.

Masafumi Takada

Composer — EDF 5, EDF 6

Masafumi Takada composed the scores for Earth Defense Force 5 (2017) and Earth Defense Force 6 (2022). He is widely known for Danganronpa (Spike Chunsoft), No More Heroes (Grasshopper Manufacture), and killer7.

Takada's EDF 5 score shifts the series' music toward a more tense, atmospheric sound compared to Fukuda's earlier entries, reflecting EDF 5's darker narrative tone. His EDF 6 score continues in this direction while incorporating more bombastic moments as the story escalates.

Other Studios

Several EDF spin-offs were developed by studios outside Sandlot.

Vicious Cycle Software

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon (2011)

Vicious Cycle Software was a US studio based in North Carolina, known primarily for the Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard Despair Engine. They developed EDF: Insect Armageddon, the only mainline-adjacent EDF title made entirely outside Japan. Vicious Cycle was acquired by Marzy Studios in 2012 and subsequently wound down.

Yuke's

Iron Rain (2019) • World Brothers (2021) • World Brothers 2 (2024)

Yuke's is a Japanese studio best known for the WWE wrestling game series. They developed EDF: Iron Rain (2019), a darker and more grounded spin-off, and both World Brothers (2021) and World Brothers 2 (2024), lighter voxel-art entries. All were published by D3 Publisher, with XSEED Games handling Western distribution for Iron Rain and World Brothers.
